Erik ten Hag identifies four Man Utd transfers in summit with club chiefs as he plans summer overhaul

Gio, 12/05/2022 - 10:22pm

ERIK TEN HAG has outlined a shortlist of priority positions Manchester United should look to address in the transfer market.

Ten Hag has held a meeting with United director John Murtough to discuss the areas United will prioritise.

Erik ten Hag has identified four positions he wants to strengthen when he arrives at Man UtdGetty

Four players will be prioritised this summer, with two midfielders, a versatile attacker and a centre-half all on the list.

United are set to lose a significant number of players this summer, with a mixture of sales and contract expirations expected to bolster the transfer kitty further.

Ten Hag’s long-term assistant Mitchell van der Gaag and former England boss Steve McLaren were also at the meeting, which is said to have taken place on Thursday after Ajax won the Dutch League for the third season in a row.

One of the targets United are likely to pursue is Barcelona star Frenkie de Jong.

Man Utd 'identify De Jong as top target', Pau Torres £51m release clause LATEST

The Red Devils are in the running for the Dutchman, in a transfer which could be worth around £70million.

Despite being a regular at cash-strapped Barcelona, the emergence of stars such as Pedri and Gavi have loosened Barca’s dependence on him, making them open to the idea of a transfer.

With Ten Hag on his way to United, this could further incentivise a move from De Jong’s camp, as he rose to prominence and fame under Ten Hag at Ajax.

Ten Hag has also informed United’s scouts to keep an eye out for the best free agents this summer, with the likes of Ousmane Dembele and Paulo Dybala potential options.

In terms of a forward, United have also been linked with Ajax winger Antony, who could become the third Ajax player to have played under Ten Hag at Ajax and join United – along with De Jong.

Outgoings are where United’s window will unravel, though. The likes of Anthony Martial, Eric Bailly and Marcus Rashford are all either out of favour out of form or have one year left on their current deals.

If United want to bring in some more high quality recruits to speed along Ten Hag’s rebuild, then some of these stars will need to be moved on for decent fees.

Mark Zuckerberg forced to SCRAP futuristic metaverse projects after $10billion loss

Gio, 12/05/2022 - 10:18pm

META is pulling the plug on several of its metaverse projects after it faced major financial losses.

Facebook-parent Meta is scrapping several of its Reality Labs initiatives, according to Reuters.

Meta is pulling the plug on several of its metaverse projects as it faces financial losses.

It’s unclear exactly which projects will be discontinued, but Meta’s chief technology officer Andrew Bosworth told employees the company can no longer fund some of its work, per En Gadget.

However, some of the metaverse projects are only slated to be “postponed” and not fully scrapped.

A Meta spokesperson confirmed that layoffs are not a part of the proposed changes, according to Reuters.

The latest news comes after Facebook revealed last month that it would scale back on costs this year.

Furthermore, the company announced that it would hire fewer employees in 2022.

Specifically, it would reduce hiring for mid-to-senior-level positions.

Facebook’s division Reality Labs – the unit which focuses on AR and VR development – is where the losses are mostly coming from.

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg revealed that the division lost $10 billion in 2021 and $3 billion in the first quarter of this year.

“Unfortunately, that’s not going to happen in 2022,” he said.

The META CEO has long been vocal about his plans for the “metaverse”.

This is defined as a digital world that will combine gaming, social media, augmented reality, and cryptocurrency for an integrated user experience.

Top Gun: Maverick was practically all in the can by June 2019 – but refining the huge action sequences and the pandemic led to a delay of three years.

And although the film is not out for another 12 days, critics have already hailed it as this year’s top blockbuster.

Dulcie Pearce and Kate Jackson reveal what you can expect to see.

Anyone who had a poster of Kelly McGillis as instructor Charlie Blackwood on their bedroom wall will be disappointed to learn she is not in the sequel.

Kelly, 64, had her own thoughts on why she wasn’t asked back, saying: “I’m old and I’m fat and I look age-appropriate for what my age is.”

Meg Ryan, 60, who played Goose’s wife, Carole, did not make the cut either.

Kosinski said the filmmakers had not been “throwing around” possible storylines for the two female characters when they were planning the new movie.

THE NEWCOMERS

IN the original film, Goose – played by ER’s Anthony Edwards – suffered fatal injuries after ejecting from his plane.

But the pilot’s legacy lives on in the form of his son, trainee pilot Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw (Whiplash’s Miles Teller).

New recruits include arrogant Hangman, played by Glen Powell, who has flickers of the original’s Iceman about him, while Phoenix (Monica Barbaro) is Top Gun’s first female pilot.

Jennifer Connelly, the Oscar-winning actress from A Beautiful Mind, appears as love interest Penny – a single mum who was referenced in the original as Maverick’s fling with the “admiral’s daughter.”

There’s a nod to the first film when Penny gets on the back of Maverick’s motorbike.

Other big names in the mix are Mad Men’s Jon Hamm, who plays Vice- Admiral Cyclone, and The Truman Show’s Ed Harris as Maverick’s supervisor.

The Mega AgencyNew recruits include Phoenix (Monica Barbaro) who is Top Gun’s first female pilot[/caption] THE PLOT

THE story is set 30 years after we last met the young guns at the US Navy’s elite fighter weapons school.

Maverick is at the top of his field, working as a test pilot and refusing to be grounded.

The story is set 30 years after we last met the young guns at the US Navy’s elite fighter weapons schoolRex Features

His mission now is to train a group of Top Gun graduates for a special mission, “the likes of which no living pilot has ever seen”.

They must neutralise a uranium enrichment plant on an unnamed island which is heavily protected by the forces of an enemy regime. But Maverick’s boss Cyclone does not want him to join the recruits on their high-stakes mission . . .

THE STUNTS

YOU want aerial acrobatics and breath-taking dog fights? You’ll get ’em – including a stunt so extreme, producers had to seek approval from the US Navy to film.

And, incredibly, they are all real – no CGI was used in filming. Behind-the-scenes footage shows the crew enveloped in a cloud of dust and equipment rattling as a plane swoops just metres above their heads.

APStunts include one so extreme, producers had to seek approval from the US Navy to film[/caption]

Jerry Bruckheimer, who produced the original and the sequel, said: “Technology has advanced so a lot of the things we couldn’t do before, we can now, especially with the aerial footage.

“And Tom is an aviator, so he can fly anything.”

Navy rules meant civilian Cruise was not allowed to operate Maverick’s F-18 Super Hornet, worth £54million. However, he does fly a P-51 propeller-driven plane and helicopters.

Glen Powell, who plays Hangman, was so committed to the role, he even got his pilot’s licence – with the training paid for by Cruise.

THE SOUNDTRACK

IT’S impossible to think of Top Gun without humming the movie’s anthem, Danger Zone by Kenny Loggins.

So fans will be pleased to learn the classic hit also returns. A few years ago, Cruise told Loggins: “We can’t do Top Gun without Danger Zone.”

PALady Gaga described her Top Gun number as ‘a love letter to the world during and after a very hard time’[/caption]

Berlin’s romantic ballad Take My Breath Away earned an Oscar for Best Original Song – the only Academy Award won by the original movie.

Now producers will be pinning their hopes on Lady Gaga’s Hold My Hand – which Cruise calls the “heartbeat” to the film – to have the same impact. Gaga, whose track Shallow from A Star Is Born won the Academy Award for Best Original Song in 2019, described her Top Gun number as “a love letter to the world during and after a very hard time.”

The Bad Romance singer also helped write the movie’s score with Hans Zimmer, Lorne Balfe and Top Gun’s composer Harold Faltermeyer.

Miles Teller sings Great Balls Of Fire in a nod to the original, and there is also a new song by OneRepublic, I Ain’t Worried.

Bombs and baddies – it’s a blast

FEEL the need . . .  the need to tell you how astonishingly good the new Top Gun is.

With all the adrenaline, spectacular stunts, humour and heart of the first blockbuster, it also has an all-action storyline of bombs and baddies to beat Bond.

APTom Cruises’ performance is a hypnotic mix of classic action hero with a more mature man who has been jaded by life[/caption]

From the very first beat of the synthesiser in the famous Top Gun anthem, it’s a non-stop blast of action at high altitude. It’s been 36 years since we last saw Tom Cruise slipping out of his shirt and into his Aviators as test pilot Pete “Maverick” Mitchell.

As rebellious as ever, and only slightly more mature, Maverick has purposely dodged any advancement through the ranks, even though he is one of the most successful pilots.

His skills are then called upon by Vice Admiral Cyclone (Jon Hamm) to train a group of the new “best of the best” graduates in the Top Gun programme, which includes Rooster (Miles Teller) the son of his late wingman Goose.

It’s clear that Maverick’s ways are considered old school by Cyclone who barks at him, “The future is coming, and you’re not in it,” as he reveals how one day fighter jets won’t even need pilots anymore.

But that doesn’t sway Mav, who gets the class’s attention on day one by going full Dead Poet’s Society and throwing the pilot manual into the bin. He wants to teach them things that can’t be learned from pesky books.

Dare I say, it’s a better film than the first? I think I dare.

Dulcie Pearce

The new class are a perfect modern mixture of cocky pilots and you immediately warm to them in a bar scene where Rooster takes to the piano to bash out Great Balls Of Fire, causing Maverick to remember Goose doing the same in the original film.

Other clever uses of flashbacks and old pictures pull you back to the young crew you originally fell in love with. And, fear not ladies and gentlemen, part of Maverick’s training programme includes taking tops off, oiling up and doing chest pumps on the beach in a very hands-on and homoerotic game of American football.

Cruise isn’t the only returning cast member, with a clearly very unwell Val Kilmer as Admiral Tom “Iceman” Kazansky making a poignant scene between the pilots.

Apart from a few scene-stealing moments from the excellent Jon Hamm, there’s barely a moment you look away from Cruise. His performance is a hypnotic mix of classic action hero with a more mature man who has been jaded by life.

And the stunts are so spectacular you can feel the G-force hitting you from the big screen. Dare I say, it’s a better film than the first? I think I dare.

You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, you’ll gasp and your heart will race. Quite simply, it will take your breath away.

Gio, 12/05/2022 - 10:16pm

ROBERT LEWANDOWSKI has reportedly told Bayern Munich he will NOT be signing a new contract.

And Barcelona are on red alert with the Pole looking to leave this summer.

Robert Lewandowski has told Bayern Munich he will not be extendingGetty

Bild claims Lewandowski informed Bayern chiefs of his shock decision on Thursday.

The 33-year-old has been at the Allianz Arena since 2014 after joining on a free transfer from rivals Borussia Dortmund.

And he has gone on to score 343 games in just 374 matches, winning numerous trophies including eight titles and 2020’s famous Treble under Hansi Flick.

However, the superstar is now looking for a new challenge.

And Barcelona are desperate to do a deal this summer for the free-scoring striker.

However, Bayern intend to play hardball as they want to keep Lewandowski until the end of his contract.

“It was hard to say goodbye to everyone at Chelsea as I had made so many friends.

“But that is football — it’s all part of the journey and, although I was disappointed to leave, it was important not to lose any sleep over it.

I’m a teen mum and had to keep my pregnancy secret for 8 months – even doctors judged me but I have no regrets

“I was never worried about how I was going to have enough money to raise her, I’d watched my mum raise a family alone and knew I could do the same.

Chilling twist in Vicky White case after ‘truth about mastermind’ behind convict lover Casey’s prison escape revealed

Gio, 12/05/2022 - 10:02pm

A NEW chilling twist has emerged in the case of Vicky White, who died by suicide after 11 days on the run with escaped prisoner Casey White.

The former prison guard, 56, was the mastermind behind the jailbreak to free her alleged prison lover, 38, according to Lauderdale County Sheriff Rick Singleton.

Singleton told NewsNation‘s Brian Entin that he doesn’t believe Casey is “smart enough to plan it all.”

He added that, despite what had been rumored, there was no trial run in the escape, as there was no evidence that Vicky took Casey out of the jail previously.

In an interview with CNN, Singleton said Vicky was “in a position” to arrange the escape, scheduling the van transport in the morning and making sure all the other armed deputies were out of the building.

“She knew that the booking officer wasn’t going to question her, the assistant director, when she told her that she was going to take him to court and drop him off with other employees,” Singleton told the network.

Vicky and murder suspect Casey were captured on Monday in Evansville, Indiana.

The pair broke out of Lauderdale County jail in Alabama on April 29 and were found 11 days later after a manhunt.

During her final moments, Vicky appeared to blame her alleged lover for staying in a motel during her final moments.

Police recordings appear to reveal some of Vicky’s final words to Casey as cops were closing in on the couple’s vehicle.

She said: “Airbags are going off. Let’s get out and run.”

Vicky then ranted: “You had to stay in some f**king motel.”

Eurovision hack plot launched by Russian cyber criminals determined to stop Ukraine from winning

Gio, 12/05/2022 - 10:00pm

RUSSIAN cyber criminals are plotting to sabotage tomorrow’s Eurovision Song Contest to stop red-hot favourites Ukraine from grabbing the glory.

Fears were rising that pro-Putin hacker gang Killnet would try to paralyse the online voting servers ahead of anticipated support for folk-rap band Kalush Orchestra.

Support for Ukraine’s Eurovision entry Kalush Orchestra has soared across Europe and they romped through Tuesday’s semi-final in Turin, Italy Fears were rising that pro-Putin hacker gang Killnet would try to paralyse the online voting servers

Killnet boasted that it had previously jammed the system with a distributed-denial-of-service (DDoS) attack and could do so again.

In a sneering message on Telegram emblazoned with a Eurovision logo, it wrote: “You can’t vote online.

“Perhaps our DDOS attack is to blame for everything.”

Russia was banned from the contest after its invasion of Ukraine in February.

Support for Kalush Orchestra has soared across Europe since and they romped through Tuesday’s semi-final in Turin, Italy.

Founder member Oleh Psiuk thanked the audience and said a win would boost Ukraine.

He said: “For our country it is so important to have victories in all ways.” He said first place would “increase morale” across Ukraine.

Lyrics for their song, Stefania, such as “I will always walk to you by broken roads” have become a rallying cry across the country.

The song’s success, and support for it, has angered Putin’s followers, including Killnet, which is thought to act for his corrupt regime.

The hackers claimed responsibility for a DDoS attack which crippled government websites in Romania, leading to the arrest of London-based Putin cheerleader Ioan Feher, 23.

Killnet claimed he had nothing to do with their action but threatened to shut down NHS ventilators if he was not released within 48 hours.

Pro-Russia hackers unsuccessfully targeted government websites in Italy on Wednesday.

Italian news sources said an attack on the Eurovision website was thwarted by protective firewalls the day before.

A Eurovision spokesman said the situation was being monitored.

He said: “Every year the Eurovision Song Contest voting system has a wide range of security measures in place to protect the audience participation from outside influences. This year is no different.”

Ducks must be fed wholemeal or granary bread and NOT white, quackers council insists

Gio, 12/05/2022 - 10:00pm

A QUACKERS council is insisting a park’s ducks are fed wholemeal or granary bread as they turn their beaks up at white.

Park officials say their clean-eating ducks should ideally be fed seed or maize.

Support officer Lauren Baker, 30, who regularly visits Priory Park in Reigate, Surrey, with son Ted, three, called the signs “a bit pretentious”.

She said: “It doesn’t surprise me as it’s Reigate.

Prince Harry is incredibly brave… our kids have play dates says James Corden

Gio, 12/05/2022 - 10:00pm

HE is the highest-paid British TV presenter.

He has earned an OBE, won 11 Emmys and is friends with everyone from David Beckham to Michelle Obama. Not bad for a self-confessed “tubby lad” from Buckinghamshire.

James Corden has earned an OBE, won 11 Emmys and is friends with everyone from David Beckham to Michelle Obama James has become pals with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle Last February he FaceTimed Meghan when interviewing Harry

Now, seven years after setting up home in sunny California, James Corden is heading back to Blighty — starting with a week-long return of his cult The Late Late Show.

He says: “The easiest thing in the world would have been to just stay, take the money and continue on, but I sort of felt like ‘I wonder if there’s something else out there?’

“I just couldn’t shake the feeling that perhaps it was time. I want to spend more time with my family and I never wanted the show to feel like it had outstayed its welcome.

“We don’t really know where we are going to be or what we are going to do — that’s stuff we’ve got to figure out. But it will be nice to have some more flexibility, and it’s exciting.

“There are some things that I would like to write and I hope there will be other things for me to do. But we still have a year left in the US and I want to make it the best one yet.”

Since launching the widely hyped CBS show in 2015, the format has been watched in more than 180 countries, while the star has created the three most watched clips in the history of late-night American TV.

‘I’M A HUGE FAN’

In 2018 his trademark segment Carpool Karaoke with Paul McCartney was the most watched YouTube clip of the year — beating Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s royal wedding.

On the topic of which James, famously, has become pals with the Duke of Sussex and his actress wife.

Most read in TV OUCH! HIT sitcom Gavin & Stacey catapulted James to super-stardom in 2007.

It ran for three series and returned in 2019 for a Christmas special — which ended on a cliff-hanger, leaving fans desperate for another instalment.

The Tony award-winning actor starred in and co-wrote the series with Ruth Jones.

If the pair do write a new script, loyal James insists it will only air on the BBC which, he also passionately believes, must remain publicly funded.

“Ruth and I are always talking, so maybe at some point we will get back in a room and see what we can do,” he says with a smile.

“We’ve had offers to do a film and other things from various, different places and networks but no — the show wouldn’t exist without the BBC. It wouldn’t be anything without the BBC.

“Arguably I wouldn’t have a career today if it wasn’t for publicly funded organisations, and after living here in the US for seven years I realised now they should be treated as a shining f***ing light of our country.

“I don’t understand the BBC-bashing. It’s phenomenal. The National Theatre, the National Health Service, the BBC — they’re all amazing, amazing things. There’s no way we’d go elsewhere.

“If we did another series it would absolutely be, if they’d have us, on BBC1.

“But certainly we don’t have any plans at the moment. I think the thing with that show is we just always want it to be a surprise, in the same way that the last one was.

“I’m really proud of Gavin & Stacey and how the last special got received.

“You don’t want to do anything where you let anybody down and I really loved the way Ruth and I went about it all — we didn’t even tell the BBC until we’d written 60 pages.”

In something of a televisual coup, last February Harry appeared atop a double decker bus to be interviewed by the 43-year-old comic.

In the segment, Harry rapped to the Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air theme tune, FaceTimed Meghan and swore while being driven around Los Angeles, drinking cups of tea.

Within minutes, clips of their cosy chat had gone viral.

James and his wife, Julia Carey, who have three kids, Carey, Max and Charlotte, live just 90 minutes from Harry and Meghan’s sprawling Montecito mansion.

So do the quartet socialise? Has he been round to the couple’s £11million home?

“I have”, he says. “It was more a sort of play date scenario [with the kids]. Then we went out for dinner after, it was lovely. Obviously I’m not telling you any more. Obviously.”

So is it true he got them a toaster for their Windsor nuptials?

“No”.

Ploughing on, then, what did he get them? “I honestly don’t remember,” he says through slightly gritted teeth. “I think Jules took care of that.

“Afterwards though, [at the evening reception], I did make a joke, dressed up as Henry VIII, and told everyone: ‘George Clooney’s here, so congratulations on your new Nespresso machine, guys!’ ”

Mildly warming to his subject, he continues: “Look, I’m a huge fan of both of them. Obviously I know Harry better than I know Meghan but I think it’s really hard to judge, or be judgmental.

“People process things and deal with things in different ways and that’s OK, and it’s all right to think whatever you think about somebody.

I just couldn’t shake the feeling that perhaps it was time. I want to spend more time with my family and I never wanted the show to feel like it had outstayed its welcome.

“I don’t know if it necessarily needs to be voiced the whole time but my experience of them has been nothing but positive.

“I have a huge amount of respect and admiration for Harry, and anyone who has been around him and spent time with him would feel exactly the same way.

“I think he is a devoted and loving husband and father and I think what they have done [in turning away from royal life] is incredibly brave and I’ll always be in their corner.

“I have nothing but admiration and respect for them. I think it’s impossible to judge any of it really.”

Next month The Late Late Show returns on Sky One for the fourth time after a Covid-enforced break of two years.

Citing British rappers Stormzy and Dave as his dream guests, James would also happily invite Harry’s estranged brother, Prince William.

“I’m a big fan of William and Kate,” he adds diplomatically. “I feel like they are going to be quite busy around the summer though, aren’t they? I think they have got quite a lot of other plans so I’m not holding my breath but they know where to find me . . .”

James suggests he and Jules will start house-hunting tentatively during his time in the capital next month.

Since announcing his decision to quit the US, he has already been linked to a number of jobs over here including Match Of The Day — which, he says, is nonsense.

In his first newspaper interview in two years, he adds: “I would be open to hosting another talk show at some point though, because I really love doing it.

“But I sort of feel like right now it would be odd to leave this show, and try and do something similar somewhere else.”

At this point in our interview James’s phone flashes, and up pops two words: “Don’t answer”.

Look, I’m a huge fan of both of them. Obviously I know Harry better than I know Meghan but I think it’s really hard to judge, or be judgmental.

“Look at this,” he sighs. “I have so many contacts all saved as ‘don’t answer, don’t answer!’ — they’re basically a bunch of psychopaths.

“I try to block them and it doesn’t seem to work because somehow there’s a way around it.”

So, besides Harry and some psychopaths, who are the most famous people in his phone book?

“Gary Barlow . . . you can’t go wrong with Gary. Or maybe Piers Morgan.” While he doesn’t have former First Lady Michelle Obama’s mobile saved, he does have a touching handwritten note from her, framed on the wall of his plush, Diptyque candle-scented LA offices. An office complete with a fully stocked drinks trolley.

In 2016 the pair memorably did Carpool Karaoke, belting out Stevie Wonder’s Signed, Sealed, Delivered.

TOXIC CANCEL CULTURE

The note reads: “Dear James, Thank you for the best car ride I’ve had in years. I think you are an incredibly talented individual but, most importantly, a really nice person. I couldn’t think of a cooler guy to drive around in a circle with for 40 minutes, Warmly, Renaissance.” [Her Secret Service name]

James, married to Jules for ten years — “we did think about renewing our vows” — has faced years of criticism over his weight. At his biggest, and after coming to fame in Alan Bennett’s History Boys and ITV series Fat Friends, the star weighed almost 21st. Since then, he has shed more than six and was recently made a WW ambassador.

So what’s the secret? Intermittent fasting, and boxing, it would appear.

“I don’t eat until 12,” he explains, sipping a vile 15-calorie, sugar-free, vitamin-laden health drink (which he’d earlier given me to aid an unfortunately timed hangover).

“I have a trainer who I box with most mornings, and so far today I’ve had an apple.  I try to eat healthily and not deprive myself.

“The notion of going on a diet is everything that is wrong because at some point you are going to revert.

“It’s like Dry January — it’s brilliant if you give up booze for January but in the back of your mind you’re like, ‘Well, in February I’m going to have a drink’.

I think he is a devoted and loving husband and father and I think what they have done [in turning away from royal life] is incredibly brave and I’ll always be in their corner.

“You don’t have to cut anything out. It’s just being aware of what you are putting in your body, trying not to eat things that have too many ingredients. I just really enjoy it [Weight Watchers]. You don’t beat yourself up if you have a bad week — you just don’t revert back to eating Quavers at midnight.”

James, one of the industry’s hardest-working stars, has a new Amazon series, Mammals, coming out in the autumn.

It will be his first UK project since the surprise Gavin & Stacey Christmas special in 2019 — which drew   18.5million viewers, becoming the most viewed non-sporting event in a decade. James, who tries to leave his CBS studios by 8pm at least three times a week to put his kids to bed, is now one of Hollywood’s most recognisable stars.

Giant billboards — his face plastered across them — line the town.

He has, however, remained about as normal as it is possible to be under the circumstances. While he credits his family, and business partner Ben Winston, for keeping his size 10s firmly on the ground, he also refuses to Google himself, and steadfastly ignores online trolls.

He is similarly pragmatic on the subject of toxic cancel culture — “it’s an impossible thing to talk about in a world where there has been a decision to remove context and nuisance.” On trolls and internet negativity, he muses: “I don’t really go there any more.

LA-LA LAND-SOUNDING

“Perhaps when I was younger those things would affect me more but at some point you just have to stop going into those rooms.

“It’s like if someone came up to me and went, ‘Everyone in there is saying you’re an ar*ehole’, you’d go, ‘What!?’ And you’d go in and go, ‘Hang on a minute’ and maybe try to level with someone and then you leave. And if you continually keep going in then that’s on you.”

So far, so La-La Land-sounding.  However, James is adamant he is not lost in showbiz. He did, though, recently complete a four-day transcendental meditation course. Which, according to Dr Google, allows devotees to “settle the body down to a state of restful alertness”.

He expands: “I have started doing transcendental meditation. I went to see a guy. I’d highly recommend it.

“You do a course, then at the end of it you have these tools where, every day, you give yourself 20 minutes of silence to let your thoughts be whatever they are, and I’ve found that very, very beneficial.

“I don’t consider it to be something particular to LA but I really enjoy it.

Fabian Edwards not expecting to receive any ‘flowers’ for Bellator London win over UFC legend Lyoto Machida

Gio, 12/05/2022 - 9:58pm

FABIAN EDWARDS could pick up the biggest victory of his career on Friday night – but he doesn’t expect to get any credit for it.

The middleweight prospect returns to the cage tomorrow night in the co-main event of Bellator London – where he’ll lock horns with former UFC light-heavyweight champion Lyoto Machida.

BELLATORFabian Edwards faces Lyoto Machida in the co-main event of Bellator London on Friday[/caption] GettyMachida, 43, is a former UFC light-heavyweight champion[/caption] BELLATORBut Edwards doesn’t foresee his critics giving him any props if he slays The Dragon[/caption]

Although Machida is well into his forties and on a three-fight skid, a victory over the lazer-accurate striker would be a marquee one for the youngest Edwards brother.

But as has so often been the case during his career, he doesn’t expect to receive any plaudits for slaying The Dragon.

The 29-year-old told SunSport: “People don’t want to give you your flowers and people want to trample over you regardless.

“It’s not about beating Machida, it’s just about how I’m carrying myself in terms of my training camp and the hours and hours I’ve been putting in.

“So it’s not just about beating him. I’m gonna be excited and proud of myself to show the work that I’ve been putting in and letting all of that show on May 13. I can’t wait for it.”

Many an up-and-comer have been left starstruck when fighting a legend of the sport.

That, however, won’t be an issue for Edwards as he didn’t spend much time watching Machida’s tear through the UFC’s 205lb division.

He said: “It feels good [to be fighting a legend]. But if I’m honest, I was watching [Anderson] Silva more. I was mainly watching Silva and was fascinated by his striking style.

“A lot of guys in the gym that grew up on that type of style and his style they’re more fascinated by it than me.

“I would’ve been a lot more shocked and [starstruck] if I was fighting Silva. Like, ‘F****** hell, I’m fighting Anderson Silva.'”

Edwards will, however, look back on locking horns with the revered and respected MMA legend after their showdown.

He said: “Once it’s all said and done, I’ll look back and be like, ‘F****** hell, I just beat Machida. That’s mad.'”

It goes without saying that Machida is a shadow of the man who struck fear into the hearts of light-heavyweights around the world.

But Edwards is refusing to overlook the Brazilian, whose last three losses have all come against top opposition.

The slick southpaw said: “I still see him as a top, top fighter in the world. Everyone has to understand that the people he’s lost to are top guys in the world.

BELLATOREdwards wants to become the first fighter to finish Machida inside the octagon[/caption]

“He’s lost to Ryan Bader – who is the light-heavyweight champ – he lost to one of the No.1 contenders in Phil Davis and he lost a split decision to the middleweight champ in Gegard Mousasi.

“It’s not like these guys have gone in there and have completely dominated him – apart from Bader who just outwrestled him – and totally finished him. So I still rate him as a top fighter.

“And when I beat him, I don’t want to hear any of that, ‘Oh, he was 43.’ You can still be 43 and still be dangerous.”

Like Machida, Edwards will be looking to return to the win column following a pair of losses to Costello van Steenis and Austin Vanderford.

And he plans to breathe new life into his 185lb title hopes with a statement-making victory at London’s SSE Wembley Arena.

He said: “I feel like a dominant performance or a finish would definitely throw me right back into title talks. I’m not just in this sport to fight.

“I don’t even see it as my job or something I do a few days a week. My pride and my ego; I hate losing. I hate losing, man.

Jan Blachowicz didn’t ‘feel the fire’ ahead of Teixeira loss but feeling happy ahead of UFC Vegas 54 clash with Rakic

Gio, 12/05/2022 - 9:58pm

JAN BLACHOWICZ admits the “fire” wasn’t burning for him before his reign as UFC light-heavyweight champion came to an end.

Blachowicz’s time atop of the stacked 205lbs division came to an end on a warm autumn evening in Abu Dhabi last October.

The body language exuded by Blachowicz ahead of his ill-fated title defence against Glover Teixeira was a far cry from what fans have seen down the years and a visual representation of his lack of motivation.

He told SunSport: “It wasn’t my day in the office. Everything went wrong. Not only in the fight; the whole camp was not so good for me.

“But my fighting spirit, I couldn’t just say, ‘OK, Glover, I will not fight against you because I feel bad.’

“I cannot say something like this. But I didn’t feel the fire.”

Despite admitting to having an off night mentally, Blachowicz is refusing to take anything away from Teixeira’s performance on the night.

He continued: “But Glover is the champion. I don’t want to explain myself [and make excuses] because I don’t like to do this and I never do it.

“He was better than me on the night, he beat me and that’s it. But now, I feel completely different.

“I feel the fire and I feel happy that I’m going to the cage again.”

Once the hunted, former champ Blachowicz is now the hunter as he bids to catapult himself back into title contention.

That pursuit of a second title shot begins this weekend in the main event of UFC Vegas 54 – in which he’ll lock horns with Alexander Rakic.

And he’s hoping an emphatic display will bag him the next crack at the belt that was once his.

He said: “I don’t think about a title shot right now. First of all, I have to beat Rakic. But when I beat him, of course, [it makes sense to fight for the title].

“He’s [ranked] No 3. I’m No 1. Either way, one of us will be the next contender for the title shot.”

Blachowicz and Rakic were due to trade blows in March, although a serious – but thankfully non-surgery-requiring – neck injury to the former champ led to the postponement of the bout.

Blachowciz recalled: “I had something in my neck that was putting pressure on my nerves. When I was doing some light sparring and training sessions, everything was good.

“But when someone hit me with a light jab on his head, I had paralysis in my left side. I couldn’t feel my left hand.

UFCJan Blachowicz will be back in action against Alexander Rakic this weekend[/caption]

“First of all, when I woke up with this pain, I thought, ‘OK, I had bad sleep.’ I’d go to a massage and stuff like this and I’ll be OK.

“But after this feeling during training, I said, ‘OK.’ Because one minute I could not move my left hand.

“So I said, ‘This is not bad sleep. This is something serious. I need to go to the doctor and do an MRI.’

“They knew everything that we were going to have to do. First of all, they said, ‘Maybe we’re going to have to do some surgery, but we’ll see.’

“But they put some medicine in my neck and after four weeks of rehabilitation I was lucky because [there was] no surgery.

“And after a couple of weeks, I could go to the gym and train normally like before.”

Blachowicz isn’t expecting an easy night at the office against the in-form Rakic but is confident he’ll remind the division he’s still a force to be reckoned with.

He said: “I think 80 or 90 per cent of the fight will be stand-up and is going to be really tough. It will be a tough fight. He’s a tough fighter, I’m a tough fighter. I feel the fire again inside of me.”

The actress, who stars as Steffy on the soap, continued: “It’s funny because I speak with my hands and they’ll say, “No, no we can see your belly.’

“So, I have to pocket a lot of it. So, I’m trying to cover the belly.

While an exact due date for the actress is unclear, she recently shared that she could be expecting the baby any day now.
