After building a career in comedy, the 27-year-old landed her first screen role in the series about the relationship between two female comics. And after being twice nominated at the Emmys, she is finally starting to believe she is doing a good job
There’s a scene in series two of Hacks that Hannah Einbinder can’t bear to watch. In it, her character Ava is in the crowd as her boss – storied, old-school comedian Deborah – performs a standup show aboard a lesbian cruise. Deborah arrives on the stage dad dancing to Pharrell’s Happy (“Oh no, she’s doing Ellen,” Ava sighs), before proceeding to comprehensively bomb, offending everyone in the audience and riling the captain’s wife (who she assumes is married not to a woman but a man, because of course only a man can captain a ship). “God, it’s painful – it’s really cringe to watch,” says Einbinder. “So tough. I feel for her because I know just how it feels.”
Einbinder is living what she describes as an “incredibly meta” existence. As well as performing her own standup comedy (she’s on tour in the US when we speak, with a stint in London on the horizon), the 27-year-old stars in a series that revolves around it. Hacks centres on the unlikely bond between Ava – a down-on-her-luck, entitled millennial comedy writer – and Deborah (TV veteran Jean Smart), an equally down-on-her-luck, Joan Rivers-esque comic inching closer towards retirement with every hokey gag she performs on stage in Las Vegas. Together, this oddest of odd couples attempt to revamp Deborah’s tired image from QVC saleswoman back to comedian, while interrogating the misogyny and double standards that have underpinned her career. Of course, it wouldn’t be as moreishly watchable – and critically acclaimed – as it is if there weren’t several bumps in the road, from ill-advised email exchanges to human ashes being accidentally thrown in the bin.Continue reading...

Agritourism unlocks economic potential in rural areas, providing visitors with a unique, behind-the-scenes experience of farming while creating much-needed jobs. Along the South Coast, where the Agri-culture Tours are proving a successful initiative, it’s the women who are leading in this particular field.
Two of the many women at the forefront of agri-tourism in the South Coast are sisters, Nelly and Nolwazi Zama, co-founders of Ubumbano Farm in Amandawe.
The Zama family started their agricultural co-operative in 2017 on a smallholding in Amandawe as a mixed farming venture. They produced choice-grade crops which gained local consumer attention, prompting the shift to commercial farming with the addition of a retail sector as well.
“The smallholding has always been owned by our father and we all got involved as we grew up. We currently have sugarcane, seasonal vegetables, macadamia nuts and bananas growing on the farm,” said Nelly.
She added that South Coast Tourism and Investment Enterprise (SCTIE) identified the farm as an ideal addition to the Agri-culture Tours, which has proved to be a success for tourism and the Zama family.
“We have been fortunate enough to engage with individuals who are interested in the product and are willing to assist. Agritourism is an educational and fun experience for many and the South Coast is fortunate in that it is made up of a farming community, from small-scale to commercial. The area is already a worldwide tourist attraction, now with agritourism, there’s an added drawcard for tourists, a different take on the tourism sector,” said Nelly.
Sharing her advice for women looking to get into the industry, Nolwazi said: “Now is the time. Tourists want to hear you share your story as a farmer. Becoming a member with the South Coast Tourism and Investment Enterprise is a great step in the right direction as you will receive the correct training and the advice. Working long hours and getting your products in markets requires patience and effort, but it is all worth it in the end.”
