Il progetto Hyperbola è uno sforzo guidato dalla comunità per fornire un sistema operativo completamente gratuito (come libertà) che sia stabile, sicuro, semplice, leggero e che cerchi di mantenere It Simple Stupid (KISS) in modalità Long Term Support (LTS).

No support for "sudo" and oriented towards Init-freedom

Hyperbola as project is fully oriented towards the Init Freedom Campaign. Therefore we support also more than only one single init-system since our release of Milky Way v0.4 for Hyperbola GNU/Linux-libre and also including HyperbolaBSD in the future. Besides we will always stay true for a system based on a lightweight and simple design making it easy to extend and mold into whatever kind of system you're building. For this we also only support opendoas as replacement for using administrative rights with an unprivileged user-account.

Happy anniversary and donated hardware for Hyperbola

Hyperbola is now official 6 years working as a free and libre system-distribution and project. We are happy with all the good progress made and besides that Hyperbola is also here to stay: On 15th April of 2017 the project and the idea behind was created. And on 13th July of 2017 the official v0.1 of our Hyperbola GNU/Linux-libre was released. But it was not stopped there: On 15th October 2017 v0.2 found its way to be released. And after further work on 9th September 2019 our release v0.3 was final. With our release v0.4 being available on 3rd March 2022 we have made the system completely independent and since then working on this release with the goal to complete our own HyperbolaBSD.

Besides that we have also received another hardware-donation on 12th April 2023: This ThinkPad X230 will also be mainly used for testing HyperbolaBSD. Thanks towards all the people and for sure also the great current donor of the hardware: zapper! Let's develop further for freedom and technical emancipation.

HyperbolaBSD is an operating-system and not a system-distribution

While we are nearing now the first states for HyperbolaBSD compiling the kernel and first work will go into the userland, we like to inform that HyperbolaBSD is a complete operating-system and not a distribution / system-distribution. We will remove at an upcoming point many more packages from extra-repository, leaving only most important applications, window-managers and more. Others being added will be left out, removed and saved within an own ports-tree for the future, such as many BSD descendant projects, for example OpenBSD, NetBSD and FreeBSD.

That maybe not the vision many have or had, but it is the point given for a further difference: HyperbolaBSD is a free and libre system, but not distributing more and more packages. So please keep an eye at the repositories to come, especially when it comes towards version 0.4.4 as we will do those steps starting there.

For more details look also at the roadmap.

Now we won't implement more packages besides the planned for release 0.4.3. If you like, please prepare a port on your own sharing for the community. It can be later part for the ports-tree. Please always remember: HyperbolaBSD will be a new BSD descendant system project, not a system-distribution any longer.

Removal of PHP

We have finally decided to remove PHP with our upcoming release 0.4.3 of Hyperbola GNU/Linux-libre at the end of August 2023. With its removal and the release we have also done the most to overcome problematic packages and software for the transfer towards HyperbolaBSD as complete and new BSD-descendant operating-system. Our future infrastructure will conclude within this as we won't use any PHP-based web-application any longer and migrate towards other solutions. We will make therefore another announcment when this will be done.

The release of version 0.4.3 marks also the end of our cycle for Hyperbola GNU/Linux-libre. For more details look also at the roadmap.

Milky Way v0.4.3 install medium release

We hereby announce a new revision of Hyperbola live image for Hyperbola GNU/Linux-libre.

Much has changed now for the new release v0.4.3 as we have fixed and updated many packages within our repositories [core] and [extra] and added more options for running Hyperbola GNU/Linux-libre on the desktop: We have therefore added fluxbox-extra and slim-theme-hyperbola as packages. With this version we end also our cycle for GNU/Linux-libre and focus on HyperbolaBSD. We have removed support for zstd, protobuf and redis, more information about that here. Also we do not support PHP any longer (more information to read here). This makes Hyperbola GNU/Linux-libre acting on purpose for freedom, stability and security. So we are happy to hand over the system towards the community and invite everybody interested to enhance it.
